Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a referral from my GP?

A: You will need a referral from your GP or another specialist to be able to claim a medicare rebate. Otherwise you will have to pay the full consultation fee. Medicare rebates can be processed electronically by our office.

Q: Does my private health insurance or Medicare cover consultations?

A: Most private health insurers do not cover specialist consultations. Medicare will cover a part of the consultation fee if you have a current referral. Referrals from GPs are valid for 12 months. Referrals from specialists are valid for 3 months.

Q: What do I bring to my appointment?

A: Please bring:

  • Your referral letter

  • Medicare card

  • Private Insurance details / Pension Card / DVA Card

  • Xray, Ultrasound, CT, MRI scans on film or disc

  • Any test results

  • New Patient Registration form (if not already faxed/emailed/posted)

Q: How long do I need to fast for an operation?

A: You will be guided by us in more detail, but in general:

For morning surgery - fast from midnight

For afternoon surgery - fast from 7:30am

Fasting includes, food and fluid, as well as chewing gum.

Do not smoke on the day of surgery.

You will be advised on whether to continue your usual medication, especially blood thinning or diabetic medication.
